Modern Pilates is a contemporary and updated approach to Pilates exercise. The programme has been designed by Cherry Baker and physiotherapist Chris Norris & associates
Nikki Hambling trained with Modern Pilates and Cherry Baker.
Modern Pilates is a method of exercise that will condition and tone the body. It's methods are very different from many traditional types of exercise. The aim is to work muscles from the inside out, creating a stronger flatter mid section, improved posture, muscle balance, realigning the spine and improving both the function and appearance of the body.
Modern Pilates is a relaxing and individual programme which works both the body & mind. Modern Pilates is also aimed at relieving stress and can help improve sleep patterns and tension, specifically in the neck and shoulders.
It works as a stand alone exercise regime for rehabilitation or in conjunction with other exercise programmes allowing for a balanced approach for the body. It is popular among all age groups and physical ability.
Background to Pilates.
Pilates is not new. It is an exercise discipline that gained popularity with dancers in New York during the 1920s. Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in Germany during the 1880s originally developed some of his methods with prisoners of war who had lost limbs or suffered injury.
A lot of his methods were drawn from swimming gymnastics, Tai Chi Yoga and other sports. Modern Pilates combines the best of Pilates’ principles with sports science and research from the 21st Century.
